Leonardo da Vinci

The term “Renaissance Man” refers to someone with many talents or areas of expertise. Leonardo is the perfect example of such a man. Leonardo da Vinci was an absolute genius. He was a painter, and architect, an inventor, philosopher, and scientist. Although most people recognize as least one of his paintings, his work as an artist is only a fraction of Leonardo’s legacy.  He filled notebooks with ideas for inventions that were far ahead of their time, including primitive airplanes, submarines, bicycles, and a helicopter. He also completed many sketches of human anatomy accompanied by detailed descriptions and analyses.

Even those with very little interest in art commonly recognize Leonardo da Vinci’s two most recognizable artistic works. The Mona Lisa, although much smaller than one would imagine, has captivated artists and art enthusiasts for many different reasons. There is mystery surrounding her expression (is she smiling or not?), and who she is modeled after (some say she is a female version of da Vinci himself). Critics praise da Vinci’s realistic use of shadows and light. Perhaps most importantly, the painting was stolen from the Louvre in Paris in 1911. The theft captured the attention of media outlets around the world and propelled The Mona Lisa into global fame.

The Last Supper is da Vinci’s last surviving fresco. It depicts the final meal shared between Jesus and his disciples before his crucifixion during which Jesus instructs the disciples on the sacrament of communion and proclaims that one of them will betray him.
